Program 04 • Hunt Drive & Search Behavior

Detection

Detection training builds a focused, independent search dog that understands how to hunt for a trained target odor and communicate the find through a clear final response.

Program Overview

What We Build

Designed for dogs with suitable hunt drive, environmental confidence, persistence, and reward motivation. Training goals are tailored to the dog’s aptitude and intended application.

Training is tailored to the individual dog and handler. Exact progression depends on temperament, age, prior training, motivation, and the goals discussed during evaluation.

Core Training Focus

  • Hunt-drive and search development
  • Reward system and motivation
  • Odor association
  • Search patterns and independence
  • Final response foundations
  • Environmental and object searches
  • Handler positioning and timing
  • Search stamina and focus
How The Work Progresses

Training Process

We build clarity first, then add difficulty. The dog should understand the task before expectations increase.

01

Aptitude Review

We assess hunt drive, reward value, persistence, independence, environmental confidence, and handler goals.

02

Search Foundation

The dog learns to search actively and independently for access to the reward.

03

Odor Association

Target odor is paired with reinforcement so the dog learns what produces the reward.

04

Search Development

Search areas, hides, distractions, and environmental variables are introduced progressively.

Handler Involvement

Long-term reliability depends on the handler understanding how the dog was trained. We emphasize clear cues, consistent expectations, good timing, and realistic maintenance so the training can carry into daily life.

What To Expect

Clear Standards.
Realistic Progression.

Detection performance depends on the dog’s genetics, motivation, environmental stability, conditioning, and the handler’s ability to read and support the search without over-directing.
