Program 03 • Scent Commitment & Line Work

Tracking

Tracking develops the dog’s ability to follow a scent picture or ground track with focus and persistence. Training is progressed according to the dog’s natural ability, drive, confidence, and experience.

Program Overview

What We Build

Appropriate for dogs with enough food, toy, hunt, or scent motivation to stay committed to a track. Suitability and goals are discussed before progression.

Training is tailored to the individual dog and handler. Exact progression depends on temperament, age, prior training, motivation, and the goals discussed during evaluation.

Core Training Focus

  • Scent commitment and track starts
  • Harness and long-line familiarity
  • Handler line management
  • Straight tracks and gradual turns
  • Age and length progression
  • Surface and environmental changes
  • Problem solving without excessive handler interference
  • Reading changes in the dog’s behavior
How The Work Progresses

Training Process

We build clarity first, then add difficulty. The dog should understand the task before expectations increase.

01

Aptitude Review

We look at motivation, confidence, nose use, persistence, and how the dog handles the environment.

02

Track Foundation

The dog learns that staying with the scent path produces the reward.

03

Progression

Length, age, turns, terrain, and complexity are increased gradually.

04

Handler Skills

The handler learns line control, pacing, observation, and how to avoid accidentally directing the dog.

Handler Involvement

Long-term reliability depends on the handler understanding how the dog was trained. We emphasize clear cues, consistent expectations, good timing, and realistic maintenance so the training can carry into daily life.

What To Expect

Clear Standards.
Realistic Progression.

Tracking is a problem-solving exercise for both dog and handler. Progress depends heavily on consistency, environmental conditions, and the dog’s natural scenting style.
